Hello everyone. I'm wondering if anyone here has had any firsthand experience or knowledge of the jazz program at the Sibelius Academy? I'm thinking of auditioning for their Jazz Masters program and I'm hoping someone here can tell me a little more about the school and Helsinki itself. I've read through their website and couple outside sources and they have a great reputation, but I'd like some firsthand info. Anyone? Thanks!

Saxydude,
funny that you should ask. I am getting sax lessons from a last year student of Sibelius Academy jazz program. But, I have only second hand experience with the Academy itself - my lessons will take place in a studio of the Academy dormitory.

If you like, I could try to hook you up with a graduate or with my teacher.

P.S. One of Academy's jazz sax teacher is an active member of this forum, although has not visited for couple of months.

Harri - Can you tell me a bit about living in Finland/Helsinki? Have you had the opportunity to hear student jazz ensembles at the Academy? Anyone that you can put me in touch with from the Academy will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Except for a 12 year stint in the States I have been living here my all long life. It is very difficyult for me to describe Finland in nutsheel and see it like a foreigner would see it. The fact that I was willing to return here shows that Finland cannot be that bad.

few links to get you started: Moving to Finland - Living in Finland

Finland for Thought (take this with a grain of salt:
I'm an American who's been living in Finland for four years. I started this blog to address some of the political, cultural, and current event issues in Finland and the United States. I am a strong advocate of liberty, individuality, equality, and tolerance. Enjoy!
I passed this thread to a couple of saxophonists teaching in Sibelius Academy.
