I have been trying to compile all data I found online (and double checked or corrected!)
all of the known Alto Saxophones made by Antoine-Joseph "Adolphe" Sax, the inventor of this instrument.
The data is from: http://homepages.ed.ac.uk/am/gdsl.html

I will post a list and would like to invite all of you to add your instruments or additional information
on the ones listed!

The Alto saxophones see a dramatic change in design shortly before the release of the second patent from 1866,
the saxophones made up to 1865 have a wide bell, after 1865 all saxophones have a much smaller (and shorter) bell.

The mechanic stays nearly the same until the very last models, and the last (third) patent with the one existing prototype
instrument keyed to high G. (Number 40842)

Here´s the list:

Question:

The claim is that these are the known saxophones built by Adolphe sax (and there are a few serial numbers not mentioned above which are not specified as altos).
However, this would make altogether around 110 Alto Saxophones manufactured between 1848 - 1882.
I am sure there are (many?) more.
However, I haven´t found any more - THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!
And post pictures if you have any!

Numbers of produced Saxophones

Sax figures: can we deduce details of Adolphe Sax's instrument production from the sources? Author(s): Adrian von Steiger Source: Revue belge de Musicologie / Belgisch Tijdschrift voor Muziekwetenschap, Vol. 70,Adolphe Sax, his influence and legacy: a bicentenary conference (2016), pp. 129-148 Published by: Societe Belge de Musicologie

Of Sax's total of ca. 46,000 signed instruments, some 42,000 bore a number, and 1.3% are known to having survived (extant instruments) and are included in the aforementioned online lists.

(…)Sax's output reached a maximum of some 2,000 instruments a year during the 1860s. This means that an average of six instruments per day had to be finished, signed, sold, paid and delivered.(…)

(…)The fact that Sax numbered his instruments - which was not common practice for most wind instrument makers of the time - is a great help in estimating his manufacturing output. These numbers have been proven to be in chronological order. Sax did not date his instruments, but thanks to instruments dated by others or that are datable by means of extant sources, the chronology of his instrument numbers can be correlated with a time line.(…)

However, the extant instruments are not representative of the production rates of the different models. Saxophones and special models such as saxhorns with pistons indépendants, keys and/or pavillon tournant are over-represented. For the military instruments, such as simply equipped saxhorns, cavalry trumpets and clairons Sax, we notice the contrary: very few survive in relation to the high demand for them that we can deduce from the inventories and instrumentation decrees. The saxophone was quantitatively subordinate to the brass instruments, accounting for less than 10% in all three inventories. In the army the saxophone was much less important than the saxhorn, and was rarely used in the Saxbanda at the Opéra. Of the extant instruments, around 50% are saxophones, which means that they are highly over represented. This might be a result of the great interest in original saxophones shown by Sax's contemporaries - thus the process of selection was partly determined by collectors.

Comparing the inventory from the lists of the three bankruptcies displays an increase in saxophone production (up to 8% in the inventory of 1877).

It can be assumed that of the 46000 instruments Adolphe Sax produced around 5% were saxophones, a total of 2300 pieces, of which around 350 instruments, 15% survived due to the interest from collectors.

I have one:

Saxophone Alto en mib
Adolphe Sax Fteur Bte
50 Rue St. Georges
a Paris
SEUL
GRAND PRIX
1867
AS (trademark)

That would make the manufacturing date circa 1876 according to Malou Haine and Ignace de Keyser at the Brussels museum

Observations on an Adolphe Sax wide bell alto

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-K9euXcs1Q&feature=youtu.be

I have been able to study early saxophones built by Adolphe Sax and others over the last years (early=pre 1900). Here I share some thoughts on "why to play early saxophones" and it might come helpful for those considering the same. I have not edited anything and I admit I have not enough time to dedicate myself right now to work towards more perfection as a player on these beautiful early instruments (and I don´t attempt to hide this here...), however, in the video I explain why they inspire my playing on modern saxophones (=1950s) for me!

The instrument that I am performing on is a wide bell alto, the first design by Adolphe Sax made in 1861 in his workshop. I did find a refaced period mouthpiece which suits the instrument fine to play it in 440 HZ.

If you have questions write to me through my website - www.uwesteinmetz.net
Thanks and have a beautiful music-filled day!
Uwe
