I've been trying out a Selmer Super Session H from WWBW . Love it, but after reading a few other post I ordered and just got in the J opening. Seems like these pieces do play better as there sizes go up. Two minutes in the kitchen with it and BAM!! bigger sound with the same warmth. What reeds are you using with the SS J?

I had to use 1.5 or 2 at the most when I tried the SS J and I lost control of sound.

Therefore, I am happy with the SS E.
Low notes play much easier on the E too.

Let us know how the J plays once you get it out of the kitchen.

I use the SS J. I use either Java 2.5 or sometimes 3's on it. The 2.5 are a bit soft for me but work well.

#2 Vandoren Java, 2 1/2's where too hard for me.

I tried a Super Session G and Super Session H - and the J is the ONE. I couldn't believe that a more opened mouthpiece actually plays more easily. For whatever reason the baffle plus tip opening seems to really work on the Super Session J. I'm actually playing an S-80 E but am keeping the J - just in case.

back again, actually tried/practiced with the Vandoren 2 1/2 and its getting easier. Just not ready to use that size at gigs yet. This reed is warming up well who knows maybe it will work out as it does give it a bigger sound.

All that I've ever tried is the "I" facing and it's satisfying and versatile. You folks all seem to have skipped that one...

I also started with an 'I' and loved it on my TT. Really opened things up. I picked up an 'H' on a WWBW Ebay fire sale some time ago, thinking it might be a bit easier to play, but it didn't work for me at all. So on a whim (and I know I posted this before), I picked up an 'J', and now the 'I' is in the drawer.

I've posted this many times about the SS-J . . . I use Vandoren Java #2 or Superial 2 or 2 1/2 . . . all shaved down to improve response. DAVE

I was using Rico Royal 3 1/2's on my 'I' and 'J', as I had a bunch of the old ones left over from when I was playing a more closed piece. Now experimenting with Alexander Superials #3 and liking them so far.

I just have an I, but like others here it's the only one I've tried. I love it. I use blue box 3.5s and they work beautifully. After all the rave reviews I'm really interested in trying a J now, but they're pretty hard to come by these days, everyone seems to be sold out and proud owners aren't parting with them. Really good mouthpieces.

I'm with the ayes (I's). RR 2.5 . I also find if I neglect sop for a while its tough to control right up front, but after a short while - sings beautifully.

I love the J on my PM system 76. Brightens up a darkish horn. I'm using RJS 2H. Thinking about trying ZZ's for a little more brightness.

On my J, I use Roberto's Winds reeds, they are GREAT size 3.5M is my preference. Warm, dark sound that can be heard but isn't annoying like most soprano sounds. If you use reeds that are a little harder than you would want, it helps with the intonation and takes out some of the annoying brightness and buzziness. Trust me, you will have enough air.

I use an F with Hemke 3s.
The sound is nice on my YSS-675; but I would like to try an H or bigger.

After years on a Lamberson, the SS J has been my piece of choice lately. I use Roberto's 2H reeds. Tried some smaller versions of the SS and found they didn't play well. As a few have said, it seems the more open versions of this mouthpiece work best.

Agree that the J is generally better, given that one is comparing "well made" Super Session mpc. But from trying several Js, it seems that
quality control is a big issue. My H plays much better than the other Js I've tried, but not as well as "good" J. At least one of the Js
didn't properly seal on the table.
