Well I've played examples of both (tenors) and I much preferred the Mark VI. The Serie II was brighter and more even-sounding but the tone was also less flexible. I felt like the VI had a more solid core to the tone, and more colour. Tuning was not as perfect though - I've found that quite a few Mark VIs play flat in the palm keys and around middle C, and it was slightly more even on the II, but for me the tone made up for it. I honestly prefer the LH pinky keys on the VI too.

On alto, I'd go for the Series II, unless it is an exceptional Mk6. On tenor, probably rather the Mk6. On soprano, neither, and on bari, well, both are fine.

As mentioned constantly on here, when you say "Mk Vl Tenor" that can mean many different things as they are totally inconsistent by individuals and different serial # ranges, so your question is basically meaningless.

Which is better? I've played both and really like each but i wanted to know others opinions.
The horn with the fewest leaks is better.

Played "both"? C'mon, every horn is different. Find one you like and buy it.

You can't play music on other people's opinions.

As was intimated above (ahem!...) the Mk VI tenor encompassed a wide range of differences over it's long manufacturing life. That should be one of your considerations! The Serie II is a good horn! It's still being produced so you have to take that into consideration as well. There is a reason that the Mk VI has gained it's reputation and that needs to be considered (if for no other reason than the ridiculous prices being asked for one!) This is why it's impractical to lump "all" Mk VI's together and to compare them to "all" Serie II's. The term "on average" might be enough for a discussion here but if you truly are interested in purchasing one or the other model, your only surefire bet is to play the individual instrument! FWIW, I think that you have narrowed the search down to two models that I would approve of but then, that's me and not you! Dr G is absolutely dead on when he said that "You can't play music on other people's opinions."
My suggestion? Don't limit yourself! Okay, you're a Selmer aficianado, so am I! You want a Selmer Paris tenor sax. What about the Ref. 36? What about the Ref. 54? What about the Serie III (Heck, while we're at it, what about the BA, the SBA and the Mk VII?) The point is, enjoy yourself and take some time to look around and play the various saxes! Who knows? Perhaps you'll find one that surprises you in that it wasn't what you were initially looking for but that it just sings to you!

So true ! I just played a couple of tenors at 2 shops in London, and, against all expectations, I was blown away by a Reference 36, over the other modern horns, and over 2 MkVIs. Had I had the cash....

A good Ref 36 is a great horn. I'm glad you had the opportunity to play one. That was my preferred Selmer for a great many years.

Now to try a Borgani Jubilee...

Mark VI by far (assuming it is one of the well made ones, since they were inconsistently made and some aren't very good)

I hate Selmer Series II Super action 80s though, I have never liked playing on one. on Alto I prefer the Reference 54s, (or an actual Mark VI), or the Series IIIs, which I own 2 of.

On tenor I don't even use Selmers, I don't like selmer tenors or baris at all, way too restricted. Prefer Yamaha, or even cannonball over selmer tenors.
