I play both. The BA is darker in the lower register en is really spreading it's sound to fill up the room. It the higher register though it is less expressive. It holds its tone but is not exceptional. The SBA on the other hand is more consistent over the whole range and, on a good day, can't be beaten by the BA. On stage the SBA holds better to. The BA is overshadowed by other instruments easily. Another mouthpiece may help. Haven't tried this so far.
Compared to my Mark VI the BA and SBA seem to be close together in terms of dark sound and potential to spread sound. The Mark VI cuts more through the background and is more in your face. At this moment I like the SBA best for it's versatility and evenness. This may change, depending on my mood, the season or the people I play with.
Don't know about other similar horns.

Thanks for the infos...! I played a SBA a few years and 1 year ago changed to a early Super 20 because the upper register is bigger
but I dont like the spread sound of the S 20 --I have heard a BA got a bigger sound then a SBA so I thought I should try that

I used to have a 29K BA and a 313K Zephyr (which according to my ears sounds really similar to a S20 of the same serial range) at the same time: I found the BA more spread than the Zephyr and actually I do not consider the Zephyr that spread. So I think you might want to try a SBA or, for even more focus, a MARK VI.

I sold the BA while the Zephyr is still with me. Exceptionally sounding horn!
