To my dismay, despite being a very dedicated and generally pleased search engine user, I have had to admit that the marketplace searches are not possible by the simple use of the search engine.

The Google Custom Search box that I always use https://www.saxontheweb.net ( top , middle, page) , simply doesn't search the ads in the marketplace, it does search everything else everywhere else on the forum, but not the ads.

I have tried this many times and with many different approaches.

So, suppose I was interested in a 6 M for sale and I put " Conn 6M for sale" in the box , I do get results
https://forum.saxontheweb.net/gtsea...=www.saxontheweb.net/&ref=&ss=4308j4401404j13

But none from the for sale section. They come from any other part of the forum where the words Conn 6M for sale are except the for sale section ( which would be what I want to search if I am looking for a horn to buy!)

Now suppose that I want to look up a horn that I am selling myself.

Then I type Schenkelaars Keilwerth Milandro, again, lots of threads but none of them from the for sale section where I have sold (and am still selling) a Schenkelaars saxophone made by Keilwerth

https://forum.saxontheweb.net/gtsea...=www.saxontheweb.net/&ref=&ss=4308j4401404j13

THIS PROBLEM with the search engine makes the for sale section almost useless after the new rules because the only way to look for any particular item for sale is to scroll back the entire for sale sections (there are of course several divided by items)

THIS is why I think that the new rules have damaged the for sale section, because if one has not seen an item one can no longer find it after the item in question has been buried under all the new items.

People even believe that their ads have disappeared while they are simply buried in the forget hole ( see this thread by a member not able to find her own ads!!)

I wouldn't have thought myself ever in the position to explain something about search to Milandro, but here I go:

- Go to section "Saxophones for Sale"
- Click on Search Forum with the dropdown icon (Right of "Forum Tools") - yes this is a fourth kind of search. Not basic, not advanced, and also not custom.
- Type Schenkelaars, hit enter
- Satisfy GAS

Thanks for sharing that Milandro, I hadn't been aware of that issue. The marketplace changed dramatically for the worse with the rule changes.

I'm very sympathetic to the argument put forth by the moderators, but the new system has castrated a formerly vibrant area of the forum. I always felt that a public discussion between buyer and seller that cannot be edited was a unique security feature of SOTW and significantly boosted confidence in transactions.

Not even completely true

I have done that and it works for 2 results schenkelaars but that is only for titles , but I know I have had at least a a few other threads where the word schenkelaars was used and they don't show up (obviously this search only searches titles)

https://forum.saxontheweb.net/search.php?searchid=43425092

see this

https://forum.saxontheweb.net/showt...rth-Toneking-type-IV-(1977-)-unmarked-stencil

but also this one ( the word Schenkelaars IS in the title but this result didn't came up)

Also I've just repeated the experience ( In for sale section Search forum ) with CONN 6M

Well, it returned a lots of non relevant results , under these circumstances the for sale section has very little chance to ever find something buried in there (look yourself!)

It's even worse, sometimes is returns results , sometimes returns no results

I've just tried first with Mark VI (!!!!) first attempt NO Matches, second attempt lots of unrelevant stuff, third attempt good and on the spot answers, same thing with Yamaha 475...

Nor really reliable

And considering the point of the new rules that disallowed bumping weekly was that "If someone is looking for what you're selling, they can search for it in the search engine" this is a real problem. I guess I just don't see the problem with someone saying "hey this is still available" every week or so. Whatever.

I didn't intend to discuss the rules, once again, because it is clear that it is not appreciated. Nor did I write this to by-pass this situation in a sneaky way.

I answered this morning the thread (see above) where someone had " lost " her ads , that brought me to consider, once again, how all this works.

We all know threads often do not stay solely on the OP's intent. Your thread starter here was useful because indeed, as Buddy noted....the search infrastructure available here cannot, in fact, deliver pertinent marketplace results....which is a further hampering beyond the already hampered 'individuals selling' section, is all.

So I'd say those comments here are completely germane to the subject you are raising....even though your 'point' was not quite the same. Given your experiments in reply #6 and #10...I'd be interested in knowing why a search engine cannot give reasonable results and why, even more, sometimes it gives more results than other times....when the exact same search query is typed in (?)
