A friend of mine in Canada has a Buffet SDA with the sparkle lacquer. It's been sitting around for a very long time and could use some work to really make it go

Buffets are kind of unusual horns so I was hoping some experts here could let me know if A) there is any interest in this horn as is or B) if it's worth his while to do the repairs etc before he sells it. FWIW, the reason he is selling is that he is a trombone player and he is also a single parent with a young boy with special needs.

Any help for my friend would be appreciated as to value and saleability.

Thanks!

Sebastian

The SDA market is there but it is not currently a hot item. That is not to say they are not worth fixing because they are. Im personally not thrilled with them but some guys are. A nice looking example can go from from a private seller for about 1800 or so.

It really depends....Id say in good playable and visual condition for 17-2200

great horns. I play a 1960 SDA tenor, little lacquer left..lol rich, lush sound, takes well to mpc changes (I like to balance it with a bright mpc.) heavy horn, solid, large palm keys. I love it, would love another if I had the cash. ;-)

Yes, the market is down on all horns -- especially so on horns that aren't Selmer Mark VIs. If you know a competent, local, repair guy you'd be better to have the horn done over and offer it 'set up and ready to gig'.

If you sell 'As-Is', you should be happy to get around $1000 for it.

I think you will not get the money back you spend for the work.
This works if you have a very well known Technician.

1000.- Bucks for a Sparkle Lacquer wasn´t much
But the market was down as "hgiles" wrotes above.

If the Horn has some Dents or Repairs it was hard to get a good Price these Days.

I´m from Europe and here you can find them between 1000.- and 1500.- Euro in good Condition.

The SDA are underrated horn, the value other giving here are good, but not for now, we are in a buyer market. If you look carefully at market section, stuff move at very low price. Web store have same difficulty, inventory doesn't move a lot. restoration or not, that is the question! If he doesn't have lot's of money the expense are ok if he sold it a fair price. If not, that's a hole in the pocket. The alternative are to just put the minimum to be playable for trying and sold it as is.
