Hello,

today i bought a Jody Jazz HR 7* for tenor sax... i tried it in the shop and i really liked the sound, even if sometimes a few bad rumors came out... but i just thought that it was a problem of mine, being used to close mpcs.

I was so busy comparing the sound of different mpcs that i forgot to do the simplest thing: look at them. Now, at home, i've noticed that the mpc i bought has a few scratches, even if it should be "new" (without considering the other people who tried it as well).

Some scratches are on the outside, so it shouldn't be a big problem.. but there's a little scary one also in the inside, which i'm afraid may damage the sound.

Have a look at these pics:

What do you suggest me to do? Is it normal to be like that for a "new" mpc?

Thanks!

It's not really "new" if they let people play test it. By definition, you bought a "used" mouthpiece. It looks like the one you bought has been around the block a few times. I wouldn't be happy about the nick inside the rail, but if it plays well, don't worry about it. It might have a negative effect, but probably not much of one. If it bothers you, I'm sure it can be fixed by a refacer (assuming it's too late to return it to the store that sold it to you as "new").

I'm no expert, but what I have learnt from this forum, the rail would concern me.

If I may make a suggestion, go back to the shop, bring their attention to it, play test a new one, see if that plays the same. If it does take the new one. If it doesn't then negotiate a lesser price on the scratched one.
It may be a mistake on the sales persons behalf to sell you a used MPC at a new price or they may have being try not to draw your attention to the scratches to get rid of it.

Seems a bit suspect to me.

Anyway just my 2 cents.

Alright, i've already emailed the photos to the vendor... on monday i'll call them and see what we can do.
I don't mind if my mpc has been used by someone else who wanted to try it... but if this person also let it fall, or misused it in any way, then this would make me upset.

ANyway, I'll keep you updated! =)
Thanks

I'm not sure where you learned that here. A partial nick like this inside a rail that is fully covered by the reed will not be a problem if there is no raised material that makes a bump there. Even if there is, you can probably rub it down with your fingernail on a nick this small.

I think it is OK to try and get a discount, but I would not exchange the mouthpiece unless you could play test the alternative.

just a thought.

If one says that a mouthpiece is not " new" because it has been tested one authorises the idea that some shops have that they don't let people test or return mouthpieces because they would have to have one test mouthpiece per type and even then, as we all should know around here, one mouthpiece of the same type doesn't play like the other , so, by definition, all mouthpieces have to be tried and so each mouthpiece might have been tested before, hence not being, strictly speaking, new.

I have witnessed a couple of time people in a shop testing one mouthpiece and then demanding to buy one other, the same (!!!) , in a sealed box.......which is both stupid and ridiculous.

Oddly enough I just bought a used Jody Jazz Hr* 7* on Friday.

If you were taken enough with the mouthpiece to purchase it then it shouldn't really matter if it has some superficial damage on it.

Awesome mouthpiece BTW.

I would want a discount...a substantial one. It very likely does not pose a problem to playing. It does pose a BIG problem to resale if you change your mind with it down the road.

Try to sell a chipped mouthpiece...see how little you will get.

Think your mpc is better than mine I bought for new. Got a new STM, finish was scratched all over the place, making me wonder if it's been tested quite a bit. But it has an unbeatable sound, and I wouldn't trade it for another shinier link.

So if you like how it plays I'd keep it, and ask for a discount. A spiffier-looking replacement may not play as well, you never know.

If you are "scared" of those scratches, PLEASE do not buy a mouthpiece from me. Don't ask for pictures, don't ask for a trial.

If you found a mouthpiece that plays well, put a reed on it and PLAY.

Sheesh...

What Dr. G said!

And I see going back and negotiating for a discount after having bought it and saying nothing at the time, and also now deciding that you like the mouthpiece and will keep it, as almost unethical.

I never buy new mouthpieces. They just don't stay new, no matter what you do.

And, like the door ding on the brand new car, you're setting yourself up for an issue when you get the first scratch on it -- which will happen with in days of acquiring it.

That nick is a nit and you'll get more. I wouldn't bother fussing about it unless you don't like it and plan to resell it -- then Sigmund451's comment comes into full blossom.

BTW, you already took a substantial hit on the resale value just by buying it.
