I don't know if the "long bell" horns actually have a longer bell (I've never stood two different vintage SBAs side-by-side to check) but they certainly have the two lowest tone holes moved a half-inch or more down the tube (i.e UP the bell, AWAY from the mouthpiece end...). This happened between 35xxx and 38xxx or so. Tenors earlier than that have tuning issues at the bottom, in my opinion. Bottom Bflat isn't so bad but low C and B tend to be pretty sharp. They can be "blown down" but I think a later horn makes life easier for the player.

And yes, the prices have gone through the roof. But now that the UK pound will get you 2 US dollars, a good plan might be to live in the UK and buy one from the US.
