Hi Guys,

I have one friend offer me your SBA 53.xxx in gold finish.

I never play one horn in gold finish.

Horn have lacquer retired and gold finish make, no in Selmer factory.

What your experience with gold finish horns?

Sounds better lacquer and silver horns? More spreed? Free bowling or no free bowling? Focused?

I only play tested horn in 30 days.

Let me know your think.

Thanks,

Wellison

The gold plating was done after the factory. That lowers the price. The last three that I saw like this sold for $5000-$6500. The top end looked like it was almost original.

Pic #1, the F and E tone holes look odd? Maybe there's a pad saver inside? I would take it out as it only keeps moisture inside the horn. It looks like this horn was severely buffed out as most of the engraving is worn away. And then there's a bad lacquer job on top of it. Honestly? I wouldn't even consider buying it unless I could play it first. It might be a great playing horn, but someone buying it based on looks alone is going to want it cheap.

Gold plate will have an interlayer of silver underneath, so I would expect the engraving to look filled in unless it was recut.

As far as this horn goes, I would be more concerned with the quality of the overhaul than the finish - that will influence the response and tone of the horn more than the finish. You will only know by playing.

+1.

Definitely give that horn a try. The gold plate (or any plating, lacquer, etc) is strictly cosmetic and will not influence how the horn plays or sounds. I like the look and as Dr G says the gold is plated over silver plate, so that plating will protect the brass better and last longer than a lacquer job. So play the horn and base any decision on how well it plays/sounds to you.

It is true that since the plating isn't original, it will lower the value (especially for a SBA or MkVI), which can be a good thing for you, the buyer. You should get it for a better (lower) price than if it was original lac or plating. You can use that as a bargaining chip if you decide you like how it plays. Could be a great buy! I think saxyjare01 has the price about right, probably closer to $5k, but a lot depends on its playing condition. If it needs work, you'd have to factor that in.
