I need suggestions for my next review. I'm reviewing Ken Barry's new Saxscape "Wilton" model alto mouthpiece....but I have no idea what to put it up against in one of my reviews. I'm looking for a mouthpiece that is similarly machined and in a ballpark price range of the Wilton ($225).

Any suggestions?

I must admit, I'm really interested in reading your review of the Saxscape, I really enjoy my tenor Saxscape and am considering the Wilton. I think almost any of the nicer HR pieces would be a good comparison: Morgan, Barone, Lamberson, RPC, etc. I've never played one so I couldn't say for sure, but my understanding is that the Wilton is a medium chamber piece, and therefore there are lots of great, similar design high-end pieces to compare with.

Wilton comparison

Maybe an RPC or SR Technologies Legend HR, that might be apples to apples. But you may want to do an apples to oranges comparison for something different, maybe a 3 way shoot out, a vintage piece and 2 modern CNC produced pieces. Maybe I'll mail you my Gregory, to go up against those pieces if you tell me how I might purchase a Japanese Harrison copy ligature size A3 in silver finish.

For purely selfish reasons, I'd like to hear what it sounds like verses an RPC (I currently play an RPC 90R)

The RPC sounds like the overall favorite...now I just need to get my hands on one. The only two I've played were refaced by Theo, so it wasn't in original condition.

Anyone have an RPC they'd be willing to let me blow on for a few days to make this comparison?

Yeah, I just sent saxaholic a pm about this; my piece might not be the right one to review. What I told saxaholic was this:

It occurs to me, though, that this one might not be the right thing for you. It's not one of the 2 "primary models" Ron sells. I've had it for 4 years or so, and don't recall with complete clarity the long conversations I had with Ron about this mouthpiece before he decided what to make for me. If I remember right, it's a model he was "experimenting" with, and he thought it would suit my purposes (and boy was he ever right!). I think it's a piece he designed to fall between the 80B and the 90R; it has no baffle, but rather a "slant." IMHO it's a tremendous piece, but it's "non-standard," or at least not one of the primaries. Given that it does fall between the 2 (though you might want to talk to Ron about this), it might be a good compromise piece for a review: some features of each of the primaries. Failing this, Ron might send you a piece or 2 for review purposes; surely he could use the publicity.

I have a 90R Saxoholic can use, but not until August 20. PM me if you'd like, Saxoholic.

I never have heard of a 90N either. I had both a 90V and 90R simultaneously and liked the 90R MUCH better.

I sent my RPC 90N to Saxaholic today, at his request, so that he can do his review. You're all witnesses! I just put a beloved mouthpiece in UPS, to a person known only as Saxaholic, somewhere deep in darkest New Jersey. Am I crazy, or what?:eek:ccasion:
