Hey,
I was wondering, is there a magazine about saxophones? If there is, can somebody tell me how to get it? lol
Otherwise, wouldn't it be fun to make one in the name of SOTW? There could be reviews about gears and lots of pictures and some previews maybe? Interviews with some good saxophonists.. Maybe there could be 4 magazines a year. (Or more if people really getting into it)
It's just an idea. I'm hoping someone will react positive and start or help starting such a thing.

I have quite a collection of Saxophone Journals going back to the 80's and to be quite honest, I get more information from this website than I ever got from the magazine. The interviews were interesting and some of the articles on older mouthpieces and saxes (the Bob Ackerman sound comparisons). These back issues are probably still available. They were pretty expensive, too.

Nice new one here in Japan called Sax and Brass....it is a mostly sax oriented magazine with a CD play-a-long.
Now if you could only read Japanese....

I tend to agree with the above. While there is occasionally something of interest to me in the Saxophone Journal (of which I occasionally purchase a copy at a Border's Booksellers), by and large it's mostly "personality pieces", often in question and answer format, that give some saxophone player's thoughts on performance, or on the history of their subtype of music.

Invariably, there is a section on pedagogy, usually with scored music and with demo tracks on the enclosed CD, but in the issues that I have purchased, this is always on some eclectic musical style (odd jazz, modern music or classical saxophone) that holds little fascination for this "practical" saxophonist.

One of the reasons that I used to seek it out (Paul Cohen's once an issue articles on the history of the saxophone) is apparently no longer included. For the rest, it's a very mixed bag.

But, then again, I feel much the same way about The Clarinet, the quarterly journal of the ICS. In that august journal, the interview articles are particularly boring, and you often get the feeling that someone is going through the motions ("What is your setup? What was it like playing with Mr. X?" and so on) just so they can claim the credit for a published article.

Of course, these are my opinions, and yours may well differ once you have sought out a copy or two.

One other thing: the Dorn firm is sort of slack in the way that they publish their magazine. I've never had any person to person dealings with them, but I have heard no end of stories from others. For that reason, I have never bothered with a subscription to the Saxophone Journal.

And, I don't like Dorn Publications.

I ordered some music from then once, and they charged my card and never sent the music to me. I kept trying to call them to get the music sent out, but could never reach a real person. I wound up having to get my bank to reverse the charges and file a grievance. Some time later I received a nasty letter from Ken Dorn, which I just trashed.

Saxophone Journal used to have some cool stuff, along with Jazz Player (also published by Dorn) but the last six or seven years they have cut their content in half, and weren't able to get any decent interviews, or articles. But, my teacher was actually interviewed for one issue, so that was kind of cool (it was just before I started studying with her actually).

I wish there was a good, affordable monthly saxophone publication.

I thought the articles by 'Emilio, the Sax Doctor' were pretty fluffy, with more hype than substance.
I, too, glance at the newsstand version(when one occasionally shows up), but unless there's a real headliner, don't drop my hard earned $$ on this overpriced pub.

I've subscribed for years (and will continue to do so) but agree that SOTW is probably a better source of saxophone info. The thing that gripes me about SJ is the weak editing . . . typos, poorly constructed sentences, and like others have posted, fluff-to-the-max. DAVE
