Sam could create some energy and excitement with his over-the-top solos. I have a friend in Port Charlotte, FL that played with Sam for years. His name is Bill Bower and he is a master saxophonist. His tenor playing is soulful, alto playing is hot, and his soprano playing is very tasteful. His use of altissimo on all three horns is masterful. I go down in the winter and share the stage with Billy on occasion and it is a real treat.
