We will be playing our sax trio at a big venue. Do I refuse to have our picture in any internet advertising. Because of the probably .05% of people that our creeps I do not even post pics or vids of my girls playing on SOTW. I got burned on another site(nothin to do w/ saxes) by using my real name. When I asked if a certain event was in my area; Some fruitcakes looked up my name on white pages.com and sent me unsolicted merchandise. Through it I got to be friends(sorta it's weird) w/ a out of state person who frequents that website. I see alot of SOTW users post there real names and locations. Anybody have problems being harassed. Is it safe to have my children's names and pics on a internet ad. They are only 9 and 11. Their teacher says they play at a jr high level. WE have been sucessful w/ our sax trios(daughters play alto and tenor and I play baritone) at nursing homes and church. This would be a bigger venue were we would get exposure(but again no money{oh well least it's fun}). Mother in-law doesn't even think the kids name should be used at the venue. My concern is the internet not the venue itself.

I know you may feel like you're being overly cautious and that something musical shouldn't need that kind of caution but i'm sure your instinct is right. If its internet publicity i'd definitely stick to photos/videos of myself playing rather than the whole family. It's a shame, because i dare say it would give your kids a boost to see "their names in lights" kind of thing and I'm usually all for a bit of risk taking but in this case it's not worth it. Explain your reasons to the organisers if the subject is raised and I would have thought they'd be sympathetic.

Of course, the safety of your daughters is paramount here. It's a sad sign of our times that because of the demented animals out there that you are worried enough to even bring this up. I have a daughter, and I went through the same concerns. (She's 20 now, and I still worry, but for other reasons.)

I agree with Rooty (I can't believe I just said that). If the venue asks for you to agree to internet publicity, provide them with a photo of yourself alone, and bill yourself as "The 'Sycc' Trio" or something like that. (I don't know if you use such a name for yourselves; but it's just a suggestion.) Often, in ads, when there's a trio, the trio's leader is shown in the photo. Of course, if your 9 year old is the leader, then you have a problem. :D

Best wishes,

Odds of any harm befalling your kids from having their pic put up on a low traffic site? Slim to not worth worrying about.

Chances of your kids being old enough and smart enough to be taught how to deal with the fact that there are a very few creeps in this world and get on with living their lives unafraid of said creeps? Up to you.

Kids appear in the local papers, TV etc all the time and are identified by name. Why hide them away? They're talented kids. Statistically, they are in more danger from you, or another family member, than they are from any creep browsing a web page.

Like you said, they'll gain in confidence from having their names up in lights. That's worth a lot to a kid, and happy, confident, aware kids are a lot less likely to fall prey to these creeps than mollycoddled overprotected kids. My $0.02

Your kids, your choice.

They asked for a pic of us for the web and names. We said NO and explained why. They understood. They will put on their web page that our group(ALTENBAR) is playing but not mention names or use pics. Our trio is called ALTENBAR. It is so named cause we use a alto tenor and a baritone. SOTWers speak up if we are using this name and it is taken. Thanks for all your advice!!!!

That trio name is the best!! I'm gonna' steal it - wait - I don't play in a trio, or live near any other sax players I enjoy playing with............

I know, I'll call it RABNETLA instead....... wait, I still don't live near any players I like.....

I need to find some players!!! It's tough when the only quartet and trio music you can play, is with yourself.....not play with yourself, but you know, record yourself playing the parts individually on a 4 track or something and then play along.....

Anyhow, more to the point, and late, Your Kids, Your Choice, the internet is a wide reaching phenomenon, so why take chances?

Local papers/news are a totally different animal in terms of world wide exposure, but you still gotta' watch out sometimes.

Viva ALTENBAR!!

DV, The other name we had was the foot stomping Zuchs. That name came from the fact that the one nursing home we played at thought we were the Zuchs. Our name isn't even close to that!!!!!The foot stomping comes from my sister in-laws disapproval of foot stomping(she took a chinese Kodai music class-no foot tapping allowed). we still tap our feet!!!!LOL

Nothing wrong with tapping your feet, it provides rhythmic accompianment.

But, if you're all OFF with your tapping.............................then it's free jazz

It's excellent that you can play horn with your kids, mine are too young yet.

Enjoy all the gigs you get with them!!
