Are they worth getting or are they a preference type of deal?

Well, filing on wood generally leaves more of a fuzzy surface whereas scraping leaves a smooth finish.

For me, I just use a small pocket knife and a reed clipper to do any adjustments needed. But I am pretty new to this as I've only been adjusting reeds since 1978.

I have never used a file. I use 400 grit sand paper, reed rush, a reed knife and various grades from of sanding/polishing cloths.
How one adjusts and works on reeds is highly personal. I know what works for me.
