My sophomore daughter ,lead tenor sax player in her high school jazz band, was asked by her jazz band director to think of a song to feature her this year! So far I came up with "I heard through the grapevine" done by the Mintzer big band! I'm primary a bari player. Her younger sis's friend, who she met at district band and did some sax quartets w/ us at church, was featured last year on Mintzer's Truth! Any ideas? Youtube links would be great!

I would suggest In A Sentimental Mood arr. Tomaro.
Here is a video of my high school playing it on the main stage at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

I highly recommend "Misty". There is a great bag band arrangement I played back in high school in a gigging band that features 1st Tenor (I was 15 at the time, and the 2nd Tenor. The 1st Tenor was HS Band Director). Even lets the Tenor "spread the wings" with a Cadenza section at the end.

I would suggest Harlem Nocturne, which is one of the most recorded songs. Listen to Sam The Man Taylor's version on his Blue Mist album which is technically demanding. It can be simplified quite easily.

There are other versions which have a more lilting, rhymical quality and are easier to play for the soloist, and easier to bring in the instruments in a larger band.
