Re: Beginner & Intermediate TOTM for May 2019 - Stompin' At The Savoy

Ok.
The tune for May 2019 will be.................
Stompin' at the Savoy by Chick Webb.
Originally in Db Major concert.

Here's Boots playing it in another key for inspiration.

Below is a link to dots and a backing track.
More backings available on youtube.

Hope to hear all of your many different variations of this tune.

Thanks for taking up the hosting task and preparing the new thread Nick, it's much appreciated.

Very nice tune too, I'v e always wanted to try this (but I'm not sure I join this month, lost my recording place and will get visitors from Canada for three weeks in my house).

Added your pick to the B& TOTM index thread:

Canadians ... in the house ?? I think it would be easier just to keep them outside - the weather is warm enough now ... :bluewink:

Are we going to get a Peebee, Brendan duet recorded live in a basement studio in Amsterdam?

Non sax playing Canadian's from Dutch heritage, so both suggestions won't become reality! :bluewink:

Ha ! One day we should do a duet via Audacity and the internet. :bluewink:

I really like this version with Mulligan and Billy Taylor, from '93.
I listen to this album regularly, it's one of my faves.
(I prefer Mulligan in his later years.)

That's a great idea for a future B&I TOTM: "Battle with whoever you want!!!"

Well I found a nice slow (85 bpm dirge speed) easy key backing track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bOo4iOsbAg&list=RD2bOo4iOsbAg&start_radio=1&t=0 and just worked out my fingerings, so I'm in. :) May not do much soloing, we'll see how far I get with a few weeks' practice lol

Here's where I'm at with it today: https://soundcloud.com/bill-holder-942023694/stompin-at-the-savoy-1 (<- used the 100bpm version, concert F so G on Tenor, one sharp, easey peasey 'cept for the bridge) ;)

@bholder: nice job breaking the ice on this one.
It’s a slightly awkward piece to play on Tenor, moving from middle Bb to Low Bb.
Perhaps that’s why Boots played it in another key.
Looking forward to hearing a little more soloing on the next take.
I’ll try and get something together myself in the next few days.
Nick.

Thanks! Definitely still needs work, my embouchure control is pitiful (shows in the occasional octave skips and occasional "honk" tone), but I'm really pretty happy given I've only been at it a couple of weeks. :)

Re: Beginner & Intermediate TOTM for May 2019 - Stompin' At The Savoy

Like the reverby sound - very relaxing towards the end ! :)

Here's my contribution - a Peebee style, low volume (7 am ) one take jake - ran out of gas halfway through the solo .. etc

Stumblin' outta the Savoy
Thanks! Yeah, the reverb is a beginner's cheat, helps smooth out the tone a bit. And it's better than the natural acoustics of my cluttered home office.

I like your take! Gives me ideas for soloing thanks. :)

Gotta love that reverb! Really stellar sound you've got coming through. Loved your transitions on this one, very fluid through the melody.

Ah, Really enjoying your tone here. Definitely hearing some Mulligan-esque qualities in there, really enjoyed your solo - wish it woulda kept going!

Well, after many years away, i'm back on SOTW and looking to start recording again. I'm going to get started on this piece soon and hopefully be able to make a decent recording in the next few days. Good luck on your future recordings and great work so far!

Re: Beginner & Intermediate TOTM for May 2019 - Stompin' At The Savoy

@bholder - Welcome to the B&I TOTM, good to see and hear you attending. Nice take with a well played melody. Like Nick already mentioned, looking forward to some more improvisation, but I know you're know to the tenor. Some advice would be to use a bit less reverb and to also try to play with a bit looser embouchure, less biting. That will give your tone a more smooth and fluent character.

@Brendan - The 'real' PeeBee is jalous: very nice take played in a relaxed mood, the leaving of spaces and more variation in the lines really works well. Great take and a very nice backing track too. :)

@jmoen3 - Good to see you back in the B&I TOTM, it's been too long! Looking forward to your submissions.

It has been a long time Jared .. way too long !!

We can't change when we were born ... you'll just have to accept the fact that there will always be someone younger and better looking than you ... :bluewink:

Nicely done Brendan.
Sounded like you were pretty relaxed through the melody and continued it on into the improv section.
I really liked the slower backing you used also.
