Ravi Coltrane is coming to New Zealand.

I will be going to see him for sure.

Are there any members here that have seen him live ???

Or these guys....
Luis Perdom - piano
Drew Gress - bass
EJ Strickland - drums

I am not familiar with these guys.

Any comments ???

Yeah - I had a chance to see him, and even chat with him for a while at a Jazz fest over the summer. Nice playing, and very friendly guy. His set was about an hour, and I enjoyed it - enough to buy a CD, and get an autograph.

I'm not sure who was backing him during this show...they didn't announce or advertise it.

Enjoy the concert!!

I heard him at Birdland twice in NYC acouple of years ago. I think that's pretty much the same rhythm section.

If it is, I'm tellin' ya-the drummer BURNS.

Thanks guys.

I'm looking forward to that.

We get a bit starved for good music here, although this year so
far I have seen Herbie Hancock and Steely Dan.

I have to wait until I get to the US to catch up with shows at Yoshi's.

I saw George Duke and Stanley Clarke there this year, plus Branford
Marsalis at UC Davis.

I heard maybe Ornette Coleman coming to our shores.
Could be interesting.

His quartet did a show here a couple months ago. EJ Strickland is one of my favorite young/emerging drummers. Great command of his craft while keeping everything balance.

Ravi can play, but the more I listen to him, the more I get drawn to the other players in his band(s). I was really into his music a couple years ago. I like his writing style. I've sort of gotten out of the "Trane" thing, so I don't listen to Ravi & John much anymore, but I don't not like their playing either. Just a different aesthetic I suppose.

If you're not familiar with EJ, check out the recordings he's made with his brother, Marcus.

Keep the network growing. :)

Ravi's a player...I got to see him at the San Francisco Jazz Festival the year they celebrated John Coltrane.

Very accomplished, very melodic, very GOOD from what I remember.

Excellent player and musician.

Well the concert was last night.
What can I say.
I was gobsmacked.
The intensity level was amazing.
Those guys did some real tricking things with some tunes that
had really unusual rhythmic twists in the melody line.

Ravi Coltrane is certainly his own man and not just getting by on
his Dad's reputation.

He did 'Giant Steps' that I thought was better than the original.
Not to take anything away from JC's version, but Ravi added some
new exciting twists in there.

One tune, written by his mother covered just about every musical
genre.

As an encore they played '26-2', which is another J.Coltrane favorite
of mine. Once again, they made it their own. Played with a latin
feel which meant doubling the tempo of the melody, plus some
added rhythmic enhancements. Wow.

A great show...:D :D :D
I found the whole experience very inspiring and in places,
quite spiritual.

yeah I saw him in july and he finished out the show with giant steps as well, he has a remarkable stage presence and I was far more impressed with him that I was with the sonny rollins show I went to in June. It's amazing that he never met his dad yet he still has the musical genius.
