I'm thinking of getting something for small gigs that may experience a little momentary rain, something light/portable.
Was wondering if maybe there was a way of repurposing lighting umbrellas, and just stand under one of those? :)

Of course the rain has to be pretty light or no one will really hear me from the sound of it hitting the umbrella and all...

Anyone have better ideas?

Staying on 'stage' (or wherever you're playing) probably is possible during a momentary light shower, but get yourself inside if you see lightning or hear thunder, even if its not close. On second thought, even if you're playing without the benefit of electronics (no microphone or sound system) there's no way you should stay outside during any kind of precipitation.

I bought a propane grill cover some years ago that I never unpacked, but kept in my gig bag just in case of rain. Of course it's not an umbrella that would allow me to keep playing. But if I was set up outside during a brief shower, I could cover all my horns/equipment with it to keep them dry.

@1saxman if there's lightning and all that jazz I'll be careful.
This is a small wedding reception and the wedding planner has notified me that the guests will all get umbrellas if it rains (as it's in November). This is of course only under light rain circumstances. I won't be playing with electronics, so my setup is light and I want to keep it that way.
Considering I prefer not to play exposed when there's even a drop to protect the horn, I thought maybe it's nice to have a little backup plan for some light rain.

@sack of phones - :)
(I won't rule it out though! But the wedding planner has so far ignored it when I sent that option...)

@milandro that's useful but looking even more portable

I though it was very portable. Portability needs to be a compromise with stability

The problem with an umbrella construction is that you need to have an heavy base and that the base is going to be in the way of playing.

Rain + Electronics = stupid. Shut it down, get out of the rain.

well of course much depends on how big the canopy is,

this one is 1,5m x 1,5 is less than 20Kg, but again I am sure that you will be able to find one that suits your needs, it is just a matter of scouring the net ( see also for trade fair appliances)

Pop up have a great resistance but of course the internal structure adds weight too, you can find canopies with only a lightweight structure but those are going to be blown away easily

weather port canopies are also a possibility

this is very cheap and lightweight

Just to update- I went with a rather diy/portable version of buying a clamp (unfortunately the only option I liked was on Amazon) that can grip an umbrella and attach it to a mic stand. The umbrella pictured is from the client in this case because the one I brought was not as effective when the rains started getting heavier. Due to corona I didn't end up playing the original wedding that prompted the post, but luckily I still found something to be able to manage this funeral. So I should be good once I find the biggest umbrella I can get my hands on.
