I'm very very very happy to announce the release of a new single on Spotify - Bopping with Lee.

This is a duet with Lee Allen recorded back in the 80s now re-mastered. A great fun and totally humbling experience.

Re: New single release Lee Allen / Pete Thomas duelling tenors - Guess who wins?

That is some phenomenal playing! Rocking from both of you! You've both got monster chops, I love the laugh/walk down bit at about 1:01 (Mr. Allen my ears tell me). You've both got some extremely vocal sounds for rock sax. Thanks for sharing Pete!

Well, actually that laugh bit was me.

The order is solo 1 = PT / Solo 2 = LA

Then swapping 4s (also in that order. PT/LA/PT/LA)

Lee has the altogether bigger beefier sound.

Just shows how poor my ears are, especially in picking out rock saxophonists! You both had a huge sound though! Great work

You are way too kind and that isn't false modesty.

I was playing churned out clichés - Lee was truly improvising. Melodies that in places referenced what I had played and developed on it. True genius. But sadly many people might think it's just rock and roll.

I still think you sounded better Pete (talking sound here, not specifically the notes you played)!

Can you give us some more background about this recording?

Hey Pete, you sound great on that recording (as you do on every recording I've heard you on!). Classic 'tenor battle' where the real winner is the listener.

I've forgotten most of the details.

This session though I think was around 1986 when Fats was playing in London, Lee, and some other guys would often stay at my house and partake well into the night. So at this time I was doing some recordings and Lee came along and did that track. (His fee was scale plus a bottle of Johnnie Walker)

The personnel is (I believe) Gerry Conway drums, Richard Thompson rhythm guitar (yes, that Richard Thompson) , Ruth Bitelli bass, Simon Wallace piano.

I only have the mix, multitrack is long gone. So it is what it is, a bit of an 80s drum heavy mix - but Lee loved that, especially this drummer who took no prisoners with his relentless driving backbeat.

There may be some more back story, I'll try to remember.
