I have just moved to Austin from Los Angeles and have discovered that there is really no pro woodwind shop here, compared to the ones in LA.

Or maybe I've just not found it yet.

I have found a truly excellent repair facility (Better Then New Band Instrument Repair), but I'm looking for a place that stocks a broader selection of horns and accessories beyond what the local band directors are asking their students to use.

Perhaps it's just the economics of the sax business here.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Jack - I haven't found one yet and I've been here about 1 1/2 years, now.

I think it's the economics of the music business everywhere.

If you want to drive to Dallas, David's Musical Instrument Repair has a selection of new and used pro horns and some pro mouthpieces,( eg. Warburton, Jody Jazz), Warburton necks and other good stuff. He's located in Carrollton.

Thanks for the tip.

Might be a nice little trip, once the weather cools off a bit.

I second David's in Carrollton (Dallas). I went there when I lived in Fort Worth.

MacSax is out of Austin, but I don't know if Mike Crouch does more than just his own line...Though he does combine with Warburton now for one of his horns.

Doesn't Antigua have a place somewhere around there too?

I know it is trivial, but the center of the State of Texas is in Mercury, TX. About 3 hours northwest of Austin.:):):)

There a couple of excellent repair techs here in Austin but I believe the question was regarding a full-service sax shop.
Antigua is in San Antonio but I believe that's their corporate HQ as well as the distributors' services. I am not aware of their having a full-service, multi-brand sax shop.

Second plug for Dave's Instrument Repair. I've never bought a horn from him, but he's done work on horns I own, and he's absolutely the best saxophone technician I've ever dealt with. When he gets done with your instrument, it will play better than it ever has before.
