hi,
I am using for years alto Berg SMS 95 2.
I can buy (without try) SMS 85 2. $75. I think good price.
What I can expect with 85 vs 95. Probably harder reeds should be used

What else could be expected.

Thanks.

You'll see a lot of the same you currently have. The Tip opening change is decent, but not extreme, so you'll probably just find it a little easier playing. Plus with Berg pieces, they say the tip openings are not accurate to the measurement. May find they are very similar all around.

I know a lot of people recommend a harder reed when going to smaller tip openings, but I had much more luck going to smaller tip openings and keeping the same softness of reed, opened up my horn, made my articulation better, and I could really get more expression in my sound.

THANKS for a quick and full answer.
Let me ask you... would you buy it $70 having 95 already?

Its a crap shoot but its a good price.

It might be the right size, it might be smaller than marked...it might be bigger than yours.

the facing may be ok, it might be terrible.

I figure either way its a good price for a blank. You can always have it rebuilt and be a great piece.

we cant answer your next question as if you should buy it.

Frankly we dont know that your 95 is an actual 095.

Thats a pretty good price for one, I would say it's a decent option. If nothing else, you could buy it at that price and if you don't like it, resell it for the same. Can't hurt to try it, you may end up liking it more!

Thanks for the answers. I lost a bid...
Also good thing was that the piece was in my home town :)
I put higher bid (usually I am not losing if decided to get something).

But … anyway, no regrets :).
