Quarter tone fingerings needed!

1028 Views 22 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  beefsicle
I'm playing a piece with lots of quarter tones, and I've found fingerings for most of them except for 1/4-sharp middle and low D (
D). I tried reaching out to my teacher but he hasn't responded because it's summer for me now. Thanks in advance!

Buy the book at the bottom of this page:

Here's the author playing all of them. You'll probably have to tweak them for bari. You may be better off lipping or experimenting with your own fingerings.

Most baritone players I've heard seem to have no trouble doing this with just the regular fingerings.

Just don't use pitch-correct then it's easy :)
I know right... It's for the piece Perihelion, actually. It's pretty cool if you're into contemporary!

The title of that piece should be "Traffic Jam in G or Thereabout".

How do you pronounce Achh ... like in "Achtung Baby" or Ack ... ?

The title of that piece should be "Traffic Jam in G or Thereabout".
Seriously, the good part starts at about 10:20, at least that's where motion sickness started kicking in

Cool sounds, although in some places it just sounds like it's out of tune. Seems to me it needs to have a visual component, like a video, to make it more interesting. I wouldn't sit through a concert version of it. I only hear the usual multiphonics.

Like having your head tied to a pillory and a hive of yellowjackets stuck on top of it with a bear trying to get to it and being completely oblivious to your presence? Yeah, I can totally see that!

I’m trying really bad to not be a jerk here, but honestly, this sounds like 4 beginners trying to play in unison. My dogs were looking at my phone wondering *** was happening. Is this seriously where music instrumental is headed? I just don’t get it.

My dogs had a similar reaction. Needs tagged NSFD - Not Safe for Dogs :p

I listened to it twice to give it a fair shake, but cannot get into it. Neither can I determine any technical complexity beyond the quarter tone fingerings that would make it worth the time. The only “resolution” seems to come at the end. Thanks for sharing.
I enjoyed it. But I have a high tolerance for ambiguity in music.

If I played that clip at home, my wife and kids would really give me the business.

Yeah very cool! Probably a lot of fun to plan.

ROCs fingering suggestion is the one I use on tenor. Haven't really tried in baritone but I'd imagine it's pretty close. Maybe try that with different combinations of left hand pinky keys as well to dial it in, though maybe you'll end up with a multiphonic coming out.

I took a quick phone scan of some pages from the quarter tone section of Londeix's book "Hello! Mr. Sax", in case it might be helpful
