Ace Cannon plays a VII alto & a VI tenor, Masato Honda plays a VII alto and Cashsax from here played or still does a a silver plated VII alto. didn't Jordan record "Night of the MKVII" on tenor? I seem to remember John Laughter posting that he enjoyed both his VII alto & tenor some yrs back, dunno if he still plays on them or not. Masato Honda is awesome.

I wouldn't look to a pro playing a certain horn for validation of same. If you like it, that's all that matters.
Oh I know that, but you always hear this player or that player plays a (insert a famous horn) and I was just wondering who played a Mark VII.

Dutch pro Fred Berkemeyer played on a Mark VII tenor, but he changed to a Mark VI years ago (and sounds better on that).

I'm a huge Arnett Cobb fan and I think he played in the 70's for a short while a Mark VII and made some recordings with it (check >this< cover). This recording with Milt Buckner on organ is great, but IMO soundwise by far not his best. He sounds cleaner, edgier and brighter on it than on most of his other recordings (I'm sure he used the same mouthpiece). Arnett changed to a Yamaha tenor after that short periode on the Mark VII, I guess he didn't like it himself that much.

So actually I don't know pro tenors that I like that play a Mark VII, except maybe our own SOTW players magical pig and dexdex (who both sound great on a VII, but are no pro's for as far as I know :)).

I remember some pictures showing Dexter Gordon with a MkVII, but I don't know if he ever recorded on it. It might have been only set for the picture.

I don't see a lot of big name pro players like Sanborn or Coz playing Selmer tenor VII's but I do run across various players of lesser fame in bands not so well known and when they list their equipment on line the sax players often have a VII.......could be an economics thing too. for the money the VII's are still very good horns, even the tenors. I see quite a few more VII alto players though. the VII altos get pretty good press & most who have & play them really like them. most players have a variety of horns & play what ever suits them the best for what they're doing or currently playing which doesn't mean that's "THE" horn they are going to use as a "signature" horn on the majority of things they play or record. I wouldn't worry about what someone else is playing unless it's just idle curiousity.....I'd be spending my time playing with the horn I had & liked the best. I love my Mark VII early alto, would never consider selling it or parting with it, but I have played a Buescher model 140 alto & a later Serie II alto while giving my VII a rest. sometimes you just want to change up for a bit. I've since sold the 140 Buescher alto & the Serie II alto.......while keeping the M255XXX Mark VII. of the 2 I sold I regret selling the Aristocrat 140 the most.....sweet horn. I know now why Selmer USA bought Buescher out way back when
