Whose playing do you prefer in this video, Getz's or Trane's? I'm not trying to determine who is "better," I'm just curious what your tastes are and what floats your boat in jazz saxophone style.
Exactly. Getz doesn't sound as good here...can hardly hear him.Reedsplinter said:I also think that Getz's tone on this clip is not altogether characteristic; it may be the way he's recorded, but he sounds darker and rather "stuffier" than he does elsewhere.
Wait a second, my ulterior motive was to bash Getz. :razz:Carbs said:What song was that?
I had never really payed much attention to Getz, but dang I gotto check him out.

Thanks Chi
Carbs: everone will have his or her own candidate, but my favorite Getz album is Sweet Rain. It's one of the first jazz LPs I bought, back in the 1960s, and I still love it: that's staying power. All the bossa nova stuff is cool, etc. etc., but the material, the unit, the presentation, the beauty, the extreme coolness of it all: this album is a great one. (There are plenty of others.) If I had to choose between Trane or Getz to go with me to the proverbial desert island, I'd pick Trane hands down: there's just more THERE there -- the probing exploration, the compositions! But if I were able to pick one Getz album to take, it would be Sweet Rain.Carbs said:Thanks.
I have to agree with their not being enough Getz. But he is a nice antidote to Trane's crazy fast rythems.
Stay with 'em both; you'll grow with them. But there are so many others! Get your head inside those earphones and LISTEN, young cat!Carbs said:I like listening to Trane, but thats really the only Tenor player I have listened to. I don't understand most of his fast stuff, it just happens to quick. You know it will be all nice and then they will just get really fast all of the sudden. But for ballads etc. I would have to pick getz, now.
Carbs, just a quick note here. Using "to" instead of "too" makes it appear that you will tune in for the many commercials, instead of saying that the station plays more commercials than you feel are necessary.Carbs said:88.1,
I may start listenting to that again, just to many commercials.
You have commercial jazz radio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man, here it's just PBS -- which of course is great. But nobody in his right mind around here tries to sell jazz on the air.Carbs said:88.1,

They are both using the same mic so it's a fair representation of their sounds. And Getz does sound stuffy.chitownjazz said:Wait a second, my ulterior motive was to bash Getz.
Seriously, I agree that Getz unfortunately is not properly amplified on this track.
The tune is Rifftide by Coleman Hawkins.
You mean the celestial stars, or Paris Hilton? If the former, that's pretty interesting stuff! If the latter, well, I read somewhere she's made of French brass! If you listen, you might be able to find out what that actually means!Carbs said:Yeah, its the UNT station.
They talk about alot of stuff I really don't care about, like the stars and stuff. Also, they don't tell you the song or who played it until after it has already played. I just rather listen to my Zune.
