It's hard to distinquish in the video, but it looks like he's playing a curvy (maybe a nino?). However I can't make out if he's doing it only with his left hand, although it sounds like it. If he's not using both hands than he's steering with his right, which doesn't look to be any more dangerous than a lot of things people do one-handedly while driving, like eating, drinking non-alcoholic beverages and picking their noses.

It's probably nowhere near as dangerous and crazy as texting while driving, because if you were just playing something mechanical you wouldn't have to take your eyes or your mental focus off the road. However, I wouldn't call it "awesome" like they do, especially when you then see him pause his playing to pick up the phone. If this video wasn't a set-up between the 3 people in it, it seems to me that this guy is so into multi-tasking while driving that he's definitely not anyone I'd want driving near me.

All depends upon driving skills & timing.
I used to practice blues harmonica while driving an MGB in the 70s....rolling a cigarette is more of a challenge.

If you use a harmonica holder you don't even have to take your hands off the wheel. I think Stevie Wonder did that a few times.

Not for Bird--they say he could roll cigarettes with one hand in a flash. He probably could have rolled cigarettes, played alto and driven all at the same time.

He's playing "Together Again" by Dave Koz.
And if he makes a habit of it he just might be together again with some of his departed relatives sooner than he wants.

That guy has nothing on Taxijazz.
Here's one of many examples (this one is with clarinet):

Here's his YouTube channel.

It's pretty easy to do this.

Here in Arkansas, the ruts on many roads are pretty deep. If you have a car or truck with lots of slack in the steering, it will often just follow the ruts whether you are steering or not. I know where there's several miles of road where I could play an entire tune without ever having to grab the steering wheel. :bluewink:

When I take long trips alone, I'll often take my mouthpiece & reed out of my case to practice on. Playing scales on the mouthpiece alone, simple songs, etc. - good flexibility exercises. Long tones on the mouthpiece alone or with the mouthpiece on the neck are good for warmups on a short drive on the way to a gig or rehearsal.

Does Stevie Wonder have a drivers license?

Even if you ignore the potential harm to others that these drivers' distractions could cause, the player/driver has to be an idiot to put a mouthpiece in their mouth when they could have an accident. I wonder what happens to their teeth (or the back of their throat) when there is any sudden deceleration.

I was wondering the same thing looking at that spear of a clarinet. Wouldn't feel to good sticking out the back of his neck if he were to hit someone going down one of those S.F. hills.

It's the taking your eyes or attention off the road while you fiddle with something in the car, in this case the sound system, that is the main problem. But the same goes for other electronics in the car like the A/C. Hell, just getting into a intense conversation can make your mind lose focus on the road action. Like Jim Morrison sang, the safest thing is to "Keep your eyes on the road, and your hands upon the wheel."

I always wondered who those Braille ATMs at the drive-thru banks were made for...
Well, how else is he going to get cash to pay for all those tickets he gets for running red lights?
