I had a day off in the city and had been wanting to try the Ishimori Woodstone tenor mouthpiece, so I went to Roberto's on a lark. I was a little skeptical as the prices in their Mark VI room are the stuff of legend. I walked in and was greeted by a very friendly young man who set me up in a practice room with the piece, a Woodstone ligature, and a few of their house brand reeds to try. I loved the piece but wanted to try some other options while I was there. They found me a larger room to play test things in, and let me hang for a few hours. I tried a Lambertson J7, a few CG pieces, along with a variety of ligatures and neck screws. The whole staff was incredibly accommodating and polite. There was no pressure to buy what I tried, and no pressure to hurry up and move along. I also watched them handle an older amateur gentleman very politely and didn't upsell him when they had the option. In the end I took the Ishimori mouthpiece, ligature, and neck screw. Great staff, fair prices, nice place to do business. I look forward to my next trip.

I've dealt with Roberto's multiple times in person and online. I had a MUCH better experience in person than ordering online. Just like Max the staff was incredibly nice offered sample reeds and let me try EVERYTHING in the store without any pressure, and I mean EVERYTHING, lol. I asked for pretty much every mouthpiece, lig, accessory, and horn in the store. I ended up leaving with a Ishimori lig even though i wasn't looking to buy anything.

But like TMA i had a pretty shoddy experience returning merch online.

It's not a big shop. I'd imagine it's the 2 guys working there filling the orders. I know they just changed their retail hours and are now closed a couple days a week so hopefully peoples experience will get better. Also ran into Joe Lovano while I was there...only in NYC...

Only day they are closed is Sunday - and that never changes. FYI

Their advertised Mark VI prices are very high. So high that I pretty much have steered clear thinking the whole place is over priced. Do they negotiate on pricing? Next time I am in NYC I may check it out.

I know this is an old link, but I was in the city today, and had some time, so I dragged my family to Roberto's. They were very friendly and welcoming, and were happy to show us the Mark VI room. Man - Disney World for sax players!!!

They had an array of Altos and Tenors. I am an alto player, so I focused on their collection of Balanced Actions, SBAs, Mark VI and Mark VIIs. Prices ranged from $5k to $12k. The salesperson was very knowledgeable about the saxes and history, and took time with us (even after I let him know I was just looking and not buying).

Unfortunately, I didn't bring a mouthpiece (we were in the city to see a play).

So I had a gig at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square last night. Flew in yesterday, checked into my hotel, realized Roberto's was ACROSS the street from my hotel. I only had a few minutes to check it out. There will be a next time when I have more time!
