First time I've purchased an Ed Pillinger mouthpiece. Any insights as to how they play, quality etc...

I have a soprano NY which plays really well with a full tone. It has some good resistance that I feel gives me more control and better intonation. I am not an experienced soprano player but took advice from Aldevis, who used to be a member here and is a great soprano player. He has in depth knowledge of the Pillinger pieces. I hope that helps.

Ed Pillinger uses a material that he calls "Synthetic Hard Rubber" (SHR) so it isn't ebonite.

I've got Pillinger pieces for all my saxophones from 'nino down to bass as well as Bb and bass clarinet. I think I have about three Pillnger soprano pieces as well as a C soprano and they play really well.

He is great to deal with and also makes reproductions of mouthpieces.

Right on. I knew of his affiliation with Pete Thomas but had never played his work. Thanks

Ed is a wonderful mouthpiece maker. I too am now an exclusively 'Pillinger' player on S A & T.
I have a number of soprano pieces from him and my favourites are a 'PJ' and an 'NY' in his HS2 150 facing (c. #6) (you won't find that facing on his website, but he will make it if you request it). I recommend Vandoren reeds on them, but they are super reed-friendly like all his pieces.
For me, he is the best maker of soprano mouthpieces in the world with the exception of Joe Giardullo.
