I'm posting here for anyone in the future who is curious about these instruments. I play one, and you can find recording of it at my homepage. Click on my user name to go to my homepage. This is a Pierret Super Artiste alto.

Great initiative!
What mouthpiece are you using on your clips?
At least they confirm what I found out on alto stencils made for Olds: the sound is powerful and bright and it has similarities with a straight soprano's in my view.

I'm using a meyer 5m. I use a selmer super session F now which I like the sound better. I also have a Pierret Competition which my tech is taking forever to work on. He hasn't even started yet. That horn has a very different sound and feel from the Super Artiste that is just beautiful. That horns intonation is really tricky though. I really like the look and sound of these horns.

Here is a clip of the mysterious Pierret Competition! Please excuse my sloppy playing. This is a clip of the horn right out of the box from France. The horn has leaks on about every note and and several bad pads. It's hard to play any note below an A. It has a warmer tone than the super artiste, and clearly less power.

Yeah, I'm still waiting on my tech... *yawn*. Wow, your horn looks so different from my super artiste, but very similar to some competition models. Pierret was all over the place with their horns. I hope your horn play good...

Well, better than it did, but it has an intermittent leak on the Eb key. If I let it slam shut, no leak, but under normal usage it sometimes doesn't close all the way. I guess it needs a new spring, because it has new pads. There are also some other leaks that are annoying but can be overcome by finger pressure. I guess I expected more after three months.... Time to find a new tech.

I just bought on of these and it is on the way. I wanted to know how these when is good playing condition sound, worth, etc. It should be here early next week and will be my first tenor owned (borrowed and rented before). Played alto so off and on for 15yrs. I am trying to see if this is worth keeping overhauling if needed or if I should just buy a new "copy" horn and or trade it off. Any and all advice would be appreciated. The person I bought it from said it played well and there is some laquer wear but only a few small dings. The pics I saw looked pretty good. I know these are the same as Santy Runyon signaure saxes but does anyone know about quality? I just want a vintage advanced/pro or new pro copy/clone tenor. Keep or trade/sell? I have Xtra large hands and after looking at the ergos, it may not work well for me for it being the tenor to really learn on/ play, we'll see. What'severyones thoughts? I'll post pics when recieved and maybe some clips too.

Congratulations, I hope you like it. Welcome to SOTW.

I have an Olds Parisian tenor, which looks like a Pierret. I like the way it sounds. There is a story that goes with this one, and I will post pictures in a couple of days. I may even post a sound clip. This is my main tenor right now.

I just got my Oxford tenor and WOW. I have'nt played tenor in 11.5 years and the notes just sang right out. I cant belive that I got this thing for such a steal. The only thing wrong with it( other than needing a little adjusting is that some one dropped it and it has the Eb key stuck due to a bent in keygaurd (which is preventing it from lifting). But thats easily fixed so I will just have a tech take care of it all at once. The sound is really sweet and smooth, lots of character different than most tenors I heard. You can tell its not a modern horn i will have to see about how in tune it is after being looked over. I was wrong about my anticipation of the left hand pinky cluster. If you have short fingers you won't even be able to reach G# without canting your hand off the left hand pearls. I used a meyer 6 (modern) on it and the thing sounds awesome. I would be interested to hear what other peope think about the sound compared to other "pro saxes." It is pretty light for an instrument this old which was surprising. The action is good but I shouldn't really comment on that until it visits the tech. I'll post pics in a day or two. I can't wait to hear what this sounds like when it gets back.

Finally got done with the repad of my Pierret Oxford Tenor and sent it off to the tech for final adjustments and restoration of a dent/solder joint as well as a missing screw. Just got it back and it sounds great:

I'll post pics in a few days. It will be up for sale at that time.
Note that the sour note on the beginning of the scale is all me, not the sax.

If you would like to see my Pierret Vibrator tenor in action, check out "Some of These days" by Keith Nichols' Blue Devils from the Whitley Bay Classic Jazz Party 2012 on Youtube. This is my take on the 1935 recording by Coleman Hawkins with the Ramblers Dance Orch. in Holland. Also audio clips of my trio - the Swing City Trio - on Youtube. It's a great horn - any inadequacies are down to the player, I'm afraid!
