Phil's masterclass cd has been discussed here before. There were some that owned this great teaching tool but were frustrated because it isn't compatible with modern computers. After my own 20 years frustration of finding a way to use it again, I bought a laptop on eBay that only had Windows XP operating system. Why didn't I think of this before? Anyway, it works beautifully and I'm pumped to start practicing again after months of lethargy. Now if only the used computer will hold up!

You can set up a Virtual Machine on any computer (including Mac) that can run Windows XP

I am curios. What program did they use that is not able to run? In extreme cases, I have set up a DOS Shell environment to execute old programs. The original DOOM worked like this just fine.

Also, when setting up XP, please be advised to keep it off the internet and, if in a virtual machine, isolate the machine from local networking. The last I heard, XP is attacked in less than 2 minutes in the wild.

it's a shame that this content is about to become extinct. if someone figures a way to duplicate it so we can perpetuate it, that'd be awesome! it'd be glad to buy a copy of it, even if it means needing to find an old Windows laptop to run it.

there are applications (I used HandBreak before) that extract a software CD content and make it into a folder that can then be burned into another CD or a USB Drive. I know on Mac you can then run Windows virtualization software that allow you to create a 'bottled' image of a program that will run natively on Mac. maybe we figure this out once the content is extracted from the CD. I volunteer to help explore options if the content is made available.

Phil's official site comments on how this material never made it into modern Windows or Mac.

thanks!

If I ever find one, I could definitely duplicate this in multiple ways. Digital ISO, The folder idea like you said, or if I spend a lot of time, I could completely rebuild the CD content into a packaged executable for digital install. I'm sure there is a lot of video and audio that could be remastered as well.

If it never made it to Windows or Mac, then it will run in a DOS shell environment. The only software that cannot run like this is a program that used a physical key to allow execution. The key had to be present in a com port, or later, a usb port, and the executable needed to see it to allow function. I doubt that this software did anything like that.

The DOS emulator to use is called DOSbox, is free to download, and will work with this program.

I had the Phil Woods software back in the day. Must have been late-90s? Very cool. I'll look around in case I still have the disc.

So, it is for Windows and the web site was wrong. At any rate, if I had it, I would try to set the executable on the CD for Windows 95. This can be done in Windows 10 by placing the disk into the carrier, and Windows will ask what to do. Tell it to open a file manager. In the file manager, find the executable that launched the CD. It should be in the root directory. Right click on it, and choose to launch it in a Windows 95 emulator. See if that works. The Dosbox emulator only works for a DOS Cd, which this is not. This was designed for Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

I just noticed that others tried with Windows XP. This software is older than XP, which is why it would not work. Also, if Windows 10 refuses to use it, a Windows emulator in Linux will certainly launch it.

Here is what it says on the box regarding requirements.

Yes, as I suspected. The Windows 95 compatibility setting should work. Most folks are not aware of being able to set the executable for compatibility in Windows 10. The video may throw a fit because it will not understand the higher resolutions of today. If the program complains, just hit continue or ignore.

I've never had a problem on any computer running XP, thought originally I used it with windows 95. It's sometimes worth asking friends and family if they might have an old laptop sitting in a drawer.
The problem is with the children and their viruses on the internet. XP was extremely stable and Windows had a disaster with 8 and 8.1. They never got it right until 10. XP has a compatibility mode as well, but it is harder to get to than in Windows 10. If you have XP running, I still advise to keep it off the internet. I made good money with people who refused to move away from XP after Windows stopped supporting it, which means they stopped fixing the exploits. Saving the important data, like check books and other things, was a big deal. And then moving them to a supported operating system so they would not be attacked with viruses and malware.

I just borrowed a computer to use the Phil cd-rom. I don't go online with it. I just clicked setup and ran the software. It works flawlessly. I switched to Macs in about 2000-reading what you wrote reminded me why! :)

Makes sense to me. All the Unix products (Mac, Linux, BSD) built in compatibility with Windows products. Good to hear! And if anyone has Windows, get a linux distro for free. You can run it off a flash drive.

Would you be able to create an ISO out of the CD so we can also try? I don't know about the legality of this, but it would be a shame to let this program disappear with time...
