Phil has just released a new model for tenor called the Equinox. I was one of the first to receive this new mouthpiece two days ago. I had been alternating between a 5* metal Florida USA Link and an .100 RPC HR rollover baffle (and have a metal Ponzol and Barone in the drawer as well), struggling to get a nice even, focused sound across the entire range, and was also looking for a bit brighter sound. I was resigned to doing long tones for the rest of my life (well, actually still am...) to reach my goal, and had bought into the "it's not the mouthpiece, it's you" argument. But I thought I would try one more time, and after communicating with Phil he convinced my to try the new Equinox.
It arrived just as I was leaving for a band rehearsal, so I took it along to try out. After just a few scales, my response was "Wow!" This piece sounded great. It added a lot of focus to my sound, brightened it up just a bit to almost exactly the sound I was looking for, was easy to articulate, the low notes slid out effortlessly at pp (something I have had to work very hard on with my other pieces), and the highs were full and rich. It only got better after a couple more hours of playing. I feel like I have jumped ahead years on my long tone results just by using this new piece. It is a 6*, which makes it a bit less powerful that the RPC, but still projects nicely. I play a late model Mark VI.
I have no affiliation with Phil other than being a satisfied customer, and it looks like my mouthpiece search is over for now.
