Hey guys,

Just wanted to let anyone in the area know about an upcoming concert. I'll be performing Takashi Yoshimatsu's Cyber-Bird Concerto with the Arizona State University Orchestra this Sunday.

December 4, 2011
2:00 pm
A Festival of Seasons and Soloists
Arizona State University's Gammage Auditorium
Tempe, AZ
Arizona State University Orchestra
Carrie Pawelski, conductor
Kathryn Christensen, piano
Suzanne Berndt, percussion

Should be a fun concert! Great piece that is rarely played in the States.

Best,

Jon Wintringham

Here's a link to me performing the first and second movements a few years back. I'll definitely get some videos up after the performance.

Hope you enjoy!

Jon

Congrats on getting the conductor on board with the piece and congrats on the upcoming performance! It's one of my favorite concertos, and you're right it doesn't get played in the states enough. Have you heard Yoshimatsu's other music? It's some really great stuff; too bad it get's ignored so much in our major orchestras.

The same over here, practically no Japanese music gets played in England. This is sad because there is so much excellent contemporary Japanese music, ranging from Romantic, all the way through to experimental.

A few weeks ago Graeme Abbott put on about four hours of Japanese music as part of his Saturday and Sunday morning programs on ABC Classic FM. Having listened to that I also wish that we could get more Japanese music.

Anyway, judging by Jonathan Wintringham's performance a few years ago, the people of Tucson are in for a treat.

While we're on the subject, it's too bad there isn't more Vaughan Williams and Britten played over here. I would sell most of my possessions to play VW's Symphony 6 or 9, or Billy Budd

Unfortunately it is a problem all over Jordan. I remember seeing a conductor, who was also involved in music administration, shouting and clapping her hands on English television, shouting "wake up you lazy English people, there is a lot of great music from outside of Europe". My response was why doesn't she do something about it then, she is a conductor and administrator? I would love to hear not only more Japanese and Korean music but also Catalan music. Catalunya is only two hours flight away but the music is only heard when Catalan musicians give concerts.

Kyle Horch plays Six Studies in English Folksong by Vaughan Williams, arranged for saxophone and piano, they work really well as a saxophone piece.

I heard a great talk recently about the "cycle" of these things. The speaker said that orchestras program "conservatively" to get higher audience attendance, then when attendance does not grow, program even more conservatively. Audiences that are largely not musically trained I've found gravitate more to works that aren't what they stereotypically think of as classical. For instance, my father, who has basically no musical knowledge, regularly enjoys the most contemporary works on my programs, like Jacob T.V. pieces, Denisov, and more.

I do love the arrangement of Six Studies for sax and piano. There is a great Harry White recording of this out there.

There are some interesting discussions on this subject on Greg Sandow's blog here:

Hey guys,

Actually, I played a great deal of Japanese rep. in London and Cornwall during my tour last year. I believe most of the works were premieres in the UK. Some great works by Nagao and Yoshimatsu! I'm hoping to make it out to London again pretty soon. Maybe I'll put on an all Japanese composers concert!

Yoshimatsu performance went well. I'll have some videos up as soon as I can.

Best,

Hi all,
here's the tv footage of my good friend Nicholas Russionello performing Cyber Bird in the final of Australia's YPA award.

Nick is only the second saxophonist to win this prestigous competition after Amy Dickson.
Cheers,
Andrew
Thank you for this. This is the performance I referred to in post #2 (above).
