Chuck was just asking me about my recording (movement I) of this popular legit saxophone work from my senior recital in college.

Thought I'd U/L the last two movements and share, from my recital back in 1987. FWIW, this was about as good as I ever played this well known piece (and probably about as good as I ever got at legit saxophone also...)

Very impressive Shawn. Didn't realize until the end that it was a live performance, so there was the nerves factor as well. Maybe you're a closet Classicist? you seem to do well with the precision of this style.

Beautiful tone control in the second movement and a good exposition of your technical abilities in the third. I had not heard this piece before, but enjoyed it very much. Has a lot of compositional influence from Poulenc?

Kudos to the pianist as well as this is not an easy piece.

Wade - appreciate the kind words. To be fair, nothing too much closet about this...as part of my saxophone study a few of these recitals were required. So I probably focused more on the classical style playing at the time.

I was in one of the big bands and did some combo playing (as well as jamming with a couple loose rock groups), but I was generaly more competent in the classical style than jazz, at the time.
I pretty much focused solely on jazz after graduation.

There are some who are equally proficient, but that takes a lot of time and energy. For me, better to stick with one or the other...I'll occaisionally play etudes and reading in the legitimate style, but not a lot. Funny, when you get playing too much jazz even those Klose or Ferling studies start to swing a little bit!!!

Shawn- I checked out all 3 movements- a very creditable performance of this piece. Good solid top G in the first and lovely playing in the second. Funny I was working on this piece myself as part of a recital exam planned for June but I picked up an injury and had to postpone. I intend to reenter for spring so hearing this has inspired me to go back and give it a go again.
And yes the piano part is a notorious roast- I’ve had problems trying to get someone to take it on!
Thanks for posting
