I've playing a gig on Veterans Day, as a jazz quartet. The venue requested we play some patriotic tunes yesterday.

It's Alto/Tenor, Guitar, Bass, Drums.

First thought: Amazing Grace, Your a Grand Old Flag?

Any suggestions? Jazz or otherwise?

Thanks,

Well, I think "I vow to thee my country" works whatever country you come from and it's a fab tune.

If you're playing at a venue which is associated with a particular regiment or section of the armed forces, then finding out what the regimental song is couldn't hurt.

I suppose Jimmy Hendrix has already stolen your thunder on the Star Spangled Banner.

I always thought Amazing Grace was an anti-slavery song, not really a patriotic one.

Try some of these listed on Wikipedia.

Edit: Just thought, the last post may go down well as an into/outro to the first set.

Thanks for the responses.

Interesting that Yankee Doodle is a suggestion.

Not Yankee Doodle. Yankee Doodle Dandy by George M Cohan (same guy that wrote "You're a Grand Old Flag")

Cohan and Souza are particularly appropriate for Veteran's Day, because Veteran's day was originally Armistice Day for WW I, and the music is from that period, or just prior.

Eh, go ahead and play "Yankee Doodle" too - many of us vets still have a sense of humor.

As a veteran of the navy, I'd love to hear "Yellow Submarine" and "Octopus' Garden".

How about the Village People's 'In the Navy'?:)

You could also play and 'Anchors Aweigh' (Navy), ' Caisson's Go Rolling Along' (Army), 'Off We Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder' (Air Force, the' Marine Hymn' (Marines), and Semper Paratus (Coast Guard).

Semper Paratus is particularly lovely, and not nearly played enough.

BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC comes to mind. ANCHORS AWEIGH is a great jazz tune - used to play it on the S.S. Lane Victory out of San Pedro whenever I was in that band.

But a really terrific old song is AMERICA, I LOVE YOU (music - Archie Gottler, lyrics - Edgar Leslie)0, from 1915)

this has to be one of the best ways to express love for one's country ........... play this way, tears are guaranteed!

If I may suggest another not particularly American " song" it would be the choir " Va pensiero" from the Verdi's Opera " Nabucco"........the reason being that in that opera this is the choir of the Jews in captivity under the Persians and it expresses the longing for freedom and for one's country that we all have and feel.

This is the great version of the Metropolitan Choir, it moves me to tears every time (even though I know that some folks in Italy used this a separatist anthem and I don't) because of its universal meaning.

Fly, thought, on wings of gold;
go settle upon the slopes and the hills,
where, soft and mild, the sweet airs
of our native land smell fragrant!

Greet the banks of the Jordan
and Zion's toppled towers...
Oh, my country so beautiful and lost!
Oh, remembrance so dear and so fatal!

Golden harp of the prophetic seers,
why dost thou hang mute upon the willow?
Rekindle our bosom's memories,
and speak to us of times gone by!

Mindful of the fate of Jerusalem,
give forth a sound of crude lamentation,
or may the Lord inspire you a harmony of voices
which may instill virtue to suffering.
