Okay,

I'm currently on tour playing alto, but thinking about picking up a backup tenor sax for the occassional gig/jam session once I finish in March. I'm considering both new and vintage horns in the sub $3k market, but let's discuss new horns for a moment. I've had the opportunity to play the P. Mauriat System-76DK tenor at Sam Ash ($2800) and have found it to be a rather good horn. It is somewhat close to the sound and feel of the MK VI I played during my school days and the Reference 54 that our tenor player currently has on tour, although not quite as refined. However, I've also heard good things about the Saxophone.com horns, which sell for much less ($1200). Both are Taiwanese made horns according to what I've gathered and have a good reputation for quality. Has anyone played both models and can lend an opinion on how the stack up against each other? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
