I got a Otto Link Metal Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece "tone master" 6 and have been playing on it with vandoren javas and it has been impossible for me to get a decent sounding tone out of it. My tone is always stuffy and airy and doesn't feel stable. Its my first metal mouthpiece but I find it very hard to play on.

Try taking in more mouthpiece and/or dropping down in reed strength to get a more vibrant sound. The mouthpiece may not be a good fit for what you are looking for, but you should give it a fair trial.

Yes, the tip is larger so you will need smaller reeds.

Make sure the table is straight too... some Links from a few years ago were not very good from the factory...

See if you can do the "suction test"... leave the MP on the neck... take the neck off the horn... block the end of the neck with the palm of your hand and suck all the air out of the neck.... The reed should stay closed for a second until it POPS back open... if you can't get any suction... have your tech check the mouthpiece to made sure it is "square and level"......

I've played for about 6 years now. I play in Highschool and it has a really good Music program going on. I'll try it the advices and see what happens. Much appreciation.

Make sure the reed is aligned properly and the lig is tight. I find these Link Metals to be a bit hard on alto but great on tenor.

The current metal otto links are trash. I tried a couple and one of them had a diagonal tip rail. :faceinpalm:

I just got a 7* alto STM back from a refacer: it used to be exactly as you describe yours, and now it plays great ! They really seem to be unfinished at the factory.

same here i have a 5*, but with taking in more mouthpiece I can get a decent sound out of it. but it`s just not a nice player.. I think I'm going to use this for my own refacing..

It might be a for a good reason that this model model mouthpiece is not popular on alto. I tried one and didn't care for it.

I had an alto 70s. Wasn't too happy with it,so had it refaced and worked on. Result---plays just great.

I don't much care for the metal Link alto mouthpieces; I found them stuffy as well. Their metal mouthpieces have always been more popular with tenor players. Maybe there's something to that.

Is this a 1940s "Tone Master" or a new Super Tone Master? New Otto Links all play dead and stuffy to me--but they can really come alive with a good refacing.
