I acquired one of these... a pretty cool vintage clarinet item. Clarinet being only an occasional double, the ability to tune on the fly is a nice thing to have.
It was frozen up when I got it, so a judicious application of penetrating lubricant, some heat to the metal bore with my soldering iron, and some soft grip pliers seemed to do the trick. In the second photo (bottom of the barrel, haha!) you can see the inner bore and the female-threaded (or so I thunk) outer metal sleeve which is bonded to the hard rubber body. These are now spinning freely with respect to each other, but...
The length of the barrel doesn't change! Nor can I pull on the barrel lengthwise to get it to extend. I was pretty sure these are threaded, like a Conn microtuner. No?
Any advice and/or insight as to how to make this work is most appreciated. Fluid Nail Finger Automotive tire Thumb

Here is the top socket on the barrel. The knurled ring, the socket bore, its base, and the barrel bore are integral and all turning together, which is as it should be, I'm sure. But they just spin inside that outer metal sleeve visible from the bottom.
