It’s the silver plating under the thin gold plating that’s oxidizing. If you polish the mouthpiece with silver polish like Hagerty it will look like new again.

What he said. After light polishing avoid storing it in proximity to hard rubber mouthpieces as rubber has sulfur which accelerates tarnishing. Avoid also plastic bags or boxes because they trap humidity which leads to tarnish. Best to store it in a dry cold environment, away from direct sun light.

Can silver oxidize through the gold layer, without destroying the gold? Can silver oxidize if the gold is still above it?
