I caught him this summer in Italy but I think he was using two basses that night; can't really remember. I do remember, though, marvelling at how they stayed out of each other's way, and yet without holding back. I've seen him a couple of times. Worth every minute.

Gary, so the trumpet and violin playing was ok too?
I've always felt that he uses them for effect, not really to make the same kind of musical statement he makes on sax, so I listen to them in that light. In other words, they are what they are, LOL.

(Ornette. If I'm wrong, don't hate me.)

i saw him like Gary with two basses and a drummer. Mind blowingly beautiful music.....even my wife loved it...and she is very mainstream in her tastes. The violin and trumpet songs...just two tracks.....were lovely in their own way...more for the mood than anything else and they let your senses regroup, so that when the alto reappears.....the sound is clear and fresh to your senses. If you get the chance to see him....it's a must!

I heard that band last year at Zankel Hall via Carneige in NYC.

I left the gig in a state of joy and feeling great- BEAUTIFUL STUFF.
