Open throat is like yawning, closed throat like coughing. It can be tempting to use cough to start the note insteas of keeping the throat open and articulating (e.g. "t") with the tongue.
I used to have a hard time conceptualizing the open throat, until someone told me it was like the position of the throat when you yawn. So there you have it.
