I spoke to Dave Walker on the phone for about an hour a few weeks back, nice guy and very knowledgeable. During the call he told me he had about 13 of these new left in his office and once they’re gone they’re gone. He’s moving on to focusing on a student line of horns since we all know that’s where the real volume can lie.
I have a trip to the UK planned for late October but if you’ve had personal experience with these horns please let me know.

Jerry Bergonzi has one and speaks highly of them. Probably some videos of him playing one.

They are sort of in the higher priced range. I'm not sure I can ever trust Amati after playing some of their horns.

Yeah there’s not really any personal “I’ve played this horn” posts it’s conjecture

I've never heard of anyone buying one, tbh. I've only seen the in the hands of players who I presume to have gotten them for free or at least heavily discounted. It's a killer set of players who sound great pretty much across the board, fwiw.

He told me that he “gave them” to his endorsers as it was “cheaper than spending money on marketing”
Honestly he seemed to have no real motivation to do anything with the line other than sell the ones that are left. Im really intrigued by them because I covet interesting horns that have character and not ones that everyone has. Based on what he told me about the thought process behind their design I really bet they play well.

Dunno what your gripe is with Amati - I love their early horns, Tonekings etc. They made / make stuff for Keilwerth. My 52 tenor is fabulous, my 51 alto wonderful

I’ve played four different 60’s era altos and they played okay but some notes were just not ever going to play in tune. I did have an early 60’s Deluxe soprano that was a beautiful player when you concentrated on lipping certain notes and I couldn’t play C or C# in tune at all in fact it sounded awful. I had to do way too much work to play these in tune. A major issue for me and a reason why I’m critiquing Amati.
Im sure that these new horns are years ahead of the old build because they finally modernized after basically making the same horns since WW II. I had the same experience with an R&C R1 soprano. The Pro One I have has made my life easier because tuning slots in perfectly with no outlying out of tune notes. I’m not fighting any instrument that gets in the way of playing with perfect intonation.

Unlike most endorsers, his seem to actually play his horns live and exclusively which is a good sign. I’d love to be able to talk to one of them about it. Having zero ability here in the US to try one makes this a risky endeavor still.

Yeah, I would love to play one someday, but my impressions of the rarity and pricing (starting over $8k if you can even find one) mean that that seems pretty unlikely. I love the look of them and the idea that anyone, anywhere wanted to try to do something different in the post-Mark VI world, but it may really be the case that there's no market to support such a thing.

If I had the scratch (and I don't!) and one was available to me, I'd make it a priority to go play the thing and, if I liked it, probably buy it. Might even be worth making it the centerpiece of a trip to London, though I obviously would make a point to enjoy my London vacation first and foremost! That's a special horn, IMO. The kind of thing we are unlikely to see more of. I've spent time in the bike, music, and now camera worlds and I'm generally unimpressed by nice gear alone. Even I have to admit, though, that I'd be pretty interested if somebody rocked up to a gig with one of these.
