has there ever been an attempt to objectively determine the resistance of different set-ups?

what I have in mind is the use of an artificial embouchoure - probably some rubber & jubilee-clip arrangement - then measuing the resistance of different set-ups and the volume or other characteristics of the equipment: rather like - crudely - bhp fihgures for a car engine

this should simplify the discussions of comparability between different mouthpieces & reeds, and encourage reed manufacurers to produced a more consistent product

any thoughts?

I don't have the skills or equipment to set this up myself - I agree a reference set up would be the starting point & the one you describe would be a good basis

some posts elsewhere have been quite sophisticated in terms of engineering background - one on the mechanics of using or not using a sling with a soprano comes to mind

but it's surprising that anything like this never been tried?
