I heard this this morning and thought it was interesting. hope it fits here it was my best guess.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2011/08/22/139805307/how-music-may-help-ward-off-hearing-loss

a relative has almost exactly the problems described. conversation seems to move to fast, background noise makes it impossible to hear. inability to hear quiet spaces between sounds, inability to hear higher pitches, playing your horn may help.

I dont think im old enough to know but wonder if anyone with hearing loss common in their family arent having trouble at a similar age to the relative? do you think you can attribute it to playing?

I realize this isnt strictly scientific without a control group and a detailed study but what the heck.

that is a good joke but really anyone have a comment?

it really got me thinking about what it would be like to go deaf if you made your living playing music. maybe Beethoven could still hear it in his head. with a piano, i guess he wouldnt need to adjust intonation like a sax.
