Hi everyone,

My sax teacher has be telling me the value of having tunes written our so they have 4 bars to each line from a learning phrasing point of view.

I'd like to take some of my fave songs and notate them in this way.

Only trouble, I have tried tonnes of notation demos but I can't find one that lets me specify only 4 bars to each line. They seem to just fit the bars in as they like. Has anyone come across software that gives you control for this? They have tonnes of great features, I just can't find one with this as a feature.

Appreciate any advice anyone has. Many thanks.

You can do this in Sibelius by creating a worksheet.

Universally speaking, you should also be able to make a break at the end of each four bars manually. I don't know what it would be called for just staves, but if you were going to do it on a greater scale, it would be a "page break".

On some notation systems, you can simply mark the last bar line of the (in this case) fourth measure and hit the return bar on your keyboard and it will have the same effect as creating a new paragraph in a text document. Some of the suggestions above make this a one-time, formatted solution to your problem. In the additonal suggestion I made, you would have to do it at the end of each four bars. No real problem, though.

In Finale:
  1. Page View
  2. MassEdit
  3. Select the bar that you want to begin the next system
  4. Press the down arrow key
You can pull measures up to the previous system, too, by using the up arrow key.
