For that money, I would suggest either a used yas-23/275, a used kessler custom, a used antigua, or a vintage buescher tru-tone. All of these will be better than the ones you mentioned (plus the yas-23 or yas-275 are really easy to find).

The tenor is most popular these days, but for ska and jazz I think an alto might be the ticket. Its brightness can be real asset in these kinds of music.

Also, altos are far cheaper than tenors!

Go look on Craig's or eBay for "The Indiana by Martin". They are a dime a dozen as they used to say. The most expensive ones have cooler engraving. but they all play great! Expect to pay about $200 or less. Save up some money for a trip to your favorite music store to get the horn in playing condition. Needless to say, try to find one that doesn't need any repair.

I think a vintage horn is a better bet than a new horn. Better quality and better resale, less devaluation. Look on the Martin forum for some ideas.

Good luck!
