I saw a Gemeinhardt M2 in an auction down the street and I bid $21.00 for it. I am the top bidder so far.
I have read that these are not the best but for very cheap it seems as though it might be worth it to start with. All the keys seemed to function but other than that I don't really know what to look for. It has some wear and tear but looks are not important to me.

On the other hand there is a guy on Craigslist selling an Artley flute for $50.00 but he says at least one of the keys is in the down position.

Any recomendations?

How much does it generaly cost to have the pads replaced?

Thanks

IMO you can't beat a Yamaha student model flute for value. I would recommend a new one or a used one in "like new" condition. I have never had a GAS attack with flutes because my Yamaha student flute keeps on working great.

Thanks for the info. This is a bit of a whim on my part. Did not want to invest much to start as who knows, I may not have enough wind to do this anyway. I'm no chicken in dog years. Just thought it would be fun to practice on the sly and then drag it out foe Christmasand and show off with a simple tune or so.

If you can get the Gemeinhardt for less than $50 and it doesn't take more than minor repairs to get it playable, you should have a totally adequate flute to learn on for a while. It won't be amazing, but you don't need something amazing at this stage--you just need something with a decent starter headjoint (something made in the last 10 years or so) and a set of pads that seal well. If you discover that you like the flute well enough to work on it seriously, you can upgrade later without feeling guilty about having a bunch of money tied up in this instrument.
