Hi guys,
I posted another lesson video today, this time breaking down Lennie Tristano's head, "Two not One". The other day I did one on Bach and Bird. Hope they're useful, happy to get any feedback here!

Two not One:

Bach or Bird, Minor Key Ideas:

Having fun doing longer and longer videos as I go.

I am a longtime private woodwind teacher in NYC, doubler/performer in local bands, and Adj. Professor at City College. Formerly a student of Lee Konitz, Greg Osby, George Garzone, Bill Pierce and more.
Thanks for your time!
Jon

Really great video, Jon. I enjoyed your playing and the way you analyzed everything. Very well done!
I also studied with George and Billy, and I spent two years with the great Jimmy Giuffre.
Lee was a huge loss for everyone.

I really enjoyed this, and I hope you put up more videos.
All the best, Mark

Lovely videos - thank you. Refreshing to hear something substantive on YouTube that isn't "advanced use of the bebop scale!" or "crazy stuff you can do over II-Vs!" And, as a big appreciator of both Lee and Warne, your videos are especially meaningful. Thanks again for your work!

Thanks, that means a lot. I guess Lee taught me to avoid anything too contrived! I like looking at vocabulary like this but not then shedding it in every key mechanically etc, anything to avoid sounding like II-V licks, with mixed success!

Really appreciate it. I'm still dealing with Lee's loss, just got the book of his lines in the mail. Never had a hard copy, just photocopies. That's amazing you got to meet Giuffre, he was around til 2008, but not well after 98 I so I think? So I missed my chance starting school in 98, and wouldn't have known who he was anyway yet! Shedding "Four Brothers" today, it's his birthday tomorrow.

This is so much more substantial than the “100 hot licks in twelve keys” stuff that’s out there. Bird getting the classical worm through klose is fascinating stuff. I got the Bach shapes book as soon as it came out as I had experienced a lot of growth as a musician once I started memorizing and analyzing Bach cello suites in the same manner as a transcribed jazz solo. John’s book has broken down this process even more for me and has really helped to develop my ability to voice lead improvised (not memorized licks!) lines.

Thank you!

Beautiful tone and conception. Thanks for posting this, it reminded me of a whole different perspective of playing and soloing that I haven't thought about for awhile.

Hi everyone, long time no see. I'm starting a FB Live workshop series on ideas from the Bach Shapes books if you are interested. This week is Circle of Fifths shapes from Bach, that can be adapted for jazz and improvisation inspiration. Something like this, but diatonic vs dominant:

You can watch it on Jon De Lucia Music on Facebook on September 10th at 11am, this Thursday, or on my site, embedded here:
https://www.jondelucia.com/new-fb-live-workshops-starting-september-10th/

I'm also running a promotion for the print edition of the book, $14 plus shipping gets you Bach Shapes and my CD As the River Sings out on Fresh Sound New Talent.

That's it, hope you can join the workshop, I'll be taking questions and posting on Youtube later along with a PDF download.
