I'm looking at purchasing a used Buffet Crampon. All I can find is a serial number. BCA 130179.

How do I know if it's a 100 series or 400 series?

All 400's I have ever seen have a double-armature on the low C key (2 armatures/spines connected to the key cup).

100's have just one (the usual detail one sees on 99% of saxes).

Also, all 400's in lacquer finish I have seen had fairly elaborate engravings, while the 100 has none, really, other than the logo....

Yep 100. I have this exact model. Great quality horn and a great value. Got mine for under $300 and it was practically mint.
