Does anyone else ever feel mild discomfort along the side of the neck and in the back of the throat when playing long tones, especially in the upper register? I was working on some long tone exercises this afternoon while breaking in some new reeds, and I started feeling it around C3.

This is not normal, if you have a teacher they will be able to see what is going wrong, as opposed to people like us on the internet who cannot.

If you don’t have a teacher then it would be advisable to get one.

One thing I could take a wild guess at is you are closing your throat and squeezing too hard up there instead of keeping open throat and good air support with diaphragm.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't normal. I certainly didn't experience it when I played in school 15-odd year ago. Was mainly seeing if anyone had thoughts on the cause.
