I've done it both ways. If I choose to use a strap it has to be a thin one that doesn't get in the way. I've got a Hyman I use with my curved Yanagisawa.

If that doesn't work, just search for "Holding the Soprano"

I prefer to play soprano without a neck strap. I feel that it actually makes it more difficult and painful to hold the soprano with a neck strap. Other people believe it's necessary to relieve some of the weight of heavier sopranos. Do whatever you like better.
